The Phoenix Journey So Far
2009 - 2010
Established in response to cutbacks in local community based mental health services, a small group of volunteers supported by John and Donna began to meet every Friday at The Friends Meeting House. The aim was to offer a welcoming and friendly space to find company and support, a low cost lunch and refreshments. Numbers began to grow and a Committee was formed by volunteers Malcolm (treasurer) Sue (secretary) Hilary (chair) and Gerry to take things forward.
2011 - 2012
In partnership with Realise Futures we facilitated 2 x 6 week 'Pathfinder' courses, supporting people to overcome and challenge disadvantages in education and employment, promoting wellbeing and personal development. Phoenix club continued to be our core project, tackling social isolation and providing support from peers, volunteers & staff.
2013 - 2014
With support from Community Action we become a registered charity. In partnership with Realise Futures we facilitated a community support & enterprise course. The 8 week course supported 8 volunteers and members to increase their skills base and confidence, supporting pathways to volunteering. We focused on community support: access and signposting, active listening skills and helping others, self-care, team work and introduction to event management.
2015 -2017
Working in partnership with 'ActivIpswich' we developed 'Active Afternoons' following the success of a taster course, participants enjoyed playing New Age Kurling and Boccia. In partnership with WEA club members enjoyed a sedate digital photography course and a series of boisterous drumming workshops! True thoughts Radio project is launched, with a 2 year funded programme, working in partnership with Ipswich Community Media and I.O Radio. Phoenix Friends is established by volunteers, meeting fortnightly and offering valuable peer support.
2018 -2019
More workshop opportunities for club members with WEA workshops in art, music and song writing; the latter producing songs and jingles for the radio show written, performed and recorded by club members with Ginny's help. True thoughts radio has 60 beneficiaries to date, with their steering group helping to shape the project's development. We have seen 55 people access the club over the last year, enjoying company and finding support. 30 people have been welcomed by Phoenix Friends.
